A failure to properly locate and identify underground utilities and other structures prior to performing road work can lead to catastrophic results. In order to avoid such outcomes the New Roads and Street Works Act of 1991 mandated that Operatives and Supervisors on highway construction projects be properly certified in utility avoidance. Our NRSWA Unit 01 Streetworks course in Slough provides the information and skills you need to establish and maintain a safe and effective job site.
While it can be useful for participants to have some familiarity with the Cable Avoidance Tool, or CAT, it is not a prerequisite for taking this course. This is a 1-day course led by one of our experienced and highly-trained instructors and will cover the following topics:
- How to read and interpret site plans in order to identify underground hazards.
- Best practices regarding excavation work on job sites located above such hazards.
- Health and safety regulations related to the performance of such work.
- The proper maintenance and operation of the CAT and other equipment.
The course will comprise a combination of classwork and practical, hands-on instruction. There may be instructional videos, PowerPoint presentations and handouts, and during the latter portion of the course participants will have a chance to familiarise themselves with actual equipment.
At the end of the course, participants will need to take and pass a 20-question, multiple-choice exam and answer at least 80% of the questions correctly. Upon passing the exam they will be issued a Streetworks Certification Card from City & Guilds, Lantra, the CABWI (Certification and Assessment Board for the Water Industry) or SQA (Scottish Qualifications Authority) which will be valid for 5 years.

The NRSWA Streetworks Unit LA is specifically for those who need to located underground apparatus whilst working on the UK roads and highways. It is a key unit which you need if you intend to qualify in any of the Streetworks excavation and reinstatement units.
