The NRSWA Cat & Genny course in Slough provides aspiring streetworks professionals the information and hands-on experience they need to identify and avoid such hazards. The Cat & Genny course is delivered in a single day. Those who successfully pass the course will receive Cat & Genny Certification valid for 3 years.
The course will be split into 2 segments: theoretical and practical. The theoretical aspects of the training will take place during the morning and be delivered in a classroom setting using PowerPoint presentations, printouts, case studies and more.
Following a break the focus will shift to hands-on training with actual equipment. Before the conclusion of the course, participants will be asked to demonstrate they have absorbed the information by using the equipment to locate underground services in a mock worksite setting. They will be expected to accurately read street plans and to adhere to best practices as taught by the instructor.
Those who successfully complete the Cat & Genny Course in Slough will be able to:
- Operate both the CAT and Genny machines safely and effectively.
- Read and understand service plans for public utilities.
- Locate those services underground using the CAT (Cable Avoidance Tool).
- Understand HSG 47 regulations regarding the avoidance of underground services.

As the course unfolds the instructor will conduct ongoing assessments of participants' understanding of the material. At the conclusion of the day's lessons, there will be a multiple-choice exam consisting of 20 questions. In order to receive Cat & Genny Certification participants will need to answer at least 80% (16 out of 20) correctly.

The NRSWA Streetworks Unit LA is specifically for those who need to located underground apparatus whilst working on the UK roads and highways. It is a key unit which you need if you intend to qualify in any of the Streetworks excavation and reinstatement units.
