How do I renew my Street Works card?

You may be surprised to know, but the rules and options surrounding renewing your NRSWA card make it very easy to ensure you always have a valid card.

So, you shouldn’t ever be in the position to say my Street Works card has expired, I can't work!
Check your NRSWA card expiry date now – for some who have more than one unit you may have different expiry dates, so check carefully.
Most authorities will not allow you to work with an expired card, so this is vital you do not let your NRSWA card expire.

My NRSWA reassessment options?

To renew your card, you must pass your NRSWA reassessment – this involves passing a multiple-choice online 45 minute test for each relevant unit.
There are a variety of course options when it comes to your Street Works reassessment.
Your experience and level of knowledge will tell you what is right for you.
The course structure may be slightly different depending on centre, but below is a rough guide to reassessments:
1 or 2 Day Reassessment
These will generally be straight to test courses, whereby you go straight to test for each unit, no refresher training is given.
Ideal for those with plenty of knowledge and experience and are confident with the rules and regulations.
3 or 5 Day Reassessment
These will include refresher training. And then you will have to do the online tests.
Ideal for those who may have been in and out of Streetworks and require a bit more help.
Single Unit O1, S1 or LA Reassessments
Some centres will say you require to do the single unit 1-day course.
Others will offer you a quick refresher and then test, or straight to test option, these two options should take approx. half a day.
Again, your level of knowledge will be a factor in what you decide is best.

The best time to renew your NRSWA?

The SWQR rules make it very easy to ensure you always have a valid card:

- Your NRSWA card is valid for a full 5 years, a good amount of time
- SWQR will add any months left remaining on your current card onto your new card, up to a maximum of 12 months, so you do not lose any time
- Real life example: if you have 8 months remaining and you renew, your new card will be valid for 5 years and 8 months
- Anytime within 12 months prior to expiry is the best time to renew

As you can see you have loads of time to arrange your renewal to ensure you never have an expired NRSWA card.

Not all my units have expired, what do I do?

This is often quite common, as you may have done your key units LA, O1 or S1 previously, and then followed up with the remainder units.
If any of those key units (LA, O1 or S1) expire they will invalidate your remainder units.
So be sure to renew these on time.
If your excavation or reinstatement units only have expired, these will not invalidate your key units which is good news. However, you still need to get these renewed in order to carry out excavation and reinstatement work on the road.

Help my NRSWA has already expired?

Once again SWQR make it as straight forward as possible to renew.
Even after your card expires, you still have up to 5 years after this date to sit a reassessment, rather than a full course.
This is very helpful for those who are in and out of Street Works.
Although depending on your knowledge at this point you may prefer to book on a full street works course again.
