In 1991 the government passed the New Roads and Street Works Act (NRSWA) that established professional standards of knowledge and competence for everyone engaged in road work in the UK. Our NRSWA Operative Streetworks Course in Mansfield enables those who aspire to perform road work to obtain the certification they need to comply with NRSWA requirements. Anyone who hopes to perform physical work on a single or dual-carriageway with speed limits up to 60 mph must have NRSWA Operative certification. The Operatives 5-Day Course covers:
- Location and avoidance of underground apparatus
- Signing, lighting and guarding (SLG)
- Performing excavation on a highway
- Reinstatement of backfill materials, sub base, concrete slabs and more.
At the end of each unit, there will be a multiple-choice exam comprising 20 questions. You must answer at least 16 of the 20 (80%) correctly to pass each unit.
Those who successfully complete the NRSWA Operative Streetworks Course in Mansfield will receive certification from City & Guilds, SQA, Lantra or another licensed certification body. Certification will be valid for 5 years and be accompanied by an SWQR card with your certification number, qualifications and expiry date.

Yes, you can carry out all the physical works covered by your units. However you need to have a streetworks supervisor assigned to the site with the equivalent supervisor units.
There are no beginner units. Each unit delivers something different. If you have no experience, there are books you can read prior to a course or if you can get some practical work experience with a company that would benefit you greatly.
If you require supervisor units - while the operative units are not compulsory – gaining the operatives units first and doing the physical works can be of help.
