Birmingham NRSWA Unit LA Cat & Genny Course

Previously known as Unit 1, the Unit LA Location and avoidance of underground apparatus or commonly known as the Cat and Genny course, will give you the skills you need to work with and around underground utilities safely.

There are 2 elements to the 1 day Cat and Genny course, theory and practical. The days course will start off with going over all of the theory aspect of locating and avoiding underground apparatus, this is delivered via PowerPoint presentations, videos, printouts, case studies and other methods. 
 
Then once the theory is completed attendees will get hands-on training with a real Cat and Genny, so that they can get a feel for what it's like to handle this type of device. At the end of the day, there will be an open book exam comprising 20 multiple-choice questions. 
Upon successful completion of the NRSWA Cat & Genny Course in Derby you will: 
 
  • Know how to safely operate the CAT & Genny device.
  • Be able to read and correctly interpret public utility service plans.
  • Be able to locate underground services using the CAT tool.
  • Understand HSG 47 regulations related to underground services.
  • Create a plan that accurately indicates the location of any underground services.
  • Have knowledge of required PPE.

Those who successfully complete the NRSWA Cat and Genny course in Derby will receive certification from Cabwi, City & Guilds, SQA, Lantra or another licensed certification body. Certification will be valid for 5 years and be accompanied by an SWQR card with your certification number, qualifications and expiry date. 


 The 1-day NRSWA Unit LA Location and avoidance of underground apparatus course is for anyone who needs to safely locate and avoid underground apparatus during their work on the local authority roads and paths. Whether that be in order to dig up the road and lay new tarmac or to check fibre cables underground, as just 2 examples.

The underground apparatus will include electrical cables, gas pipes, water mains and fiber optics.

Yes. Unit LA (previously known as unit 1) is for both Streetworks operatives and supervisors working on the roads, they do not require a separate qualification. 

The NRSWA Streetworks Unit LA is specifically for those who need to located underground apparatus whilst working on the UK roads and highways. It is a key unit which you need if you intend to qualify in any of the Streetworks excavation and reinstatement units.
