The NRSWA CAT & Genny course in Loughborough is designed to provide Operatives and Supervisors with the theoretical and hands-on experience they need to perform roadworks in the presence of underground cables and other utilities. The course is ideal for anyone involved in street works who wants to advance in their career and for those seeking a new career working construction on UK roadways.
The CAT & Genny course is delivered over the course of a single day with instruction divided into morning and afternoon units. During the morning unit, the instructor will cover the theoretical aspects of working around cables, pipes and other underground infrastructure. A variety of delivery methods will be used including videos, PowerPoint presentations, hand-outs and more.
During the afternoon unit, participants will have an opportunity to obtain hands-on experience with the CAT and Genny machinery. They will learn how best to wield it to locate underground services and how to understand its output. They will also have a chance to demonstrate what they learned during the morning session about best practices, applicable regulations and more, and demonstrate they are able to decipher street plans.
Upon successful conclusion of the NRSWA CAT & Genny course in Loughborough participants will be able to:
- Operate both the CAT and Genny machine according to best practices.
- Accurately interpret street service plans relative to gas/electrics/water and more.
- Locate underground utilities using the Cable Avoidance Tool.
- Perform work in accordance with HSG 47 regulations.
- Create a street plan indicating any services detected.
- Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of required PPE.
The instructor will engage in continuous assessment of participants to ensure they are absorbing the material. At the end of the day, participants will be tested on their knowledge by way of a multiple-choice exam. In order to pass the course at least 16 of the 20 questions must be answered correctly.

The NRSWA Streetworks Unit LA is specifically for those who need to located underground apparatus whilst working on the UK roads and highways. It is a key unit which you need if you intend to qualify in any of the Streetworks excavation and reinstatement units.
