NRSWA Streetworks Supervisor Course - Birmingham

It is the Supervisors role to oversee the construction work on the UK's local authority roads and paths. They must have a comprehensive understanding of every aspect of road work so that they can ensure the work is performed to current standards established by the New Roads & Street Works Act of 1991 as well as other relevant legislation and codes of practice.

 The NRSWA Supervisor Streetworks Course in Birmingham will take place over 5 consecutive days. Each unit will be led by one of our experienced and highly-trained instructors.

There are 2 elements to the course. Firstly theory in the classroom, a variety of delivery methods will be employed including PowerPoint presentations, video, handouts, and q&a's. 

Then secondly you will get hands on experience having a go at monitoring the practical side for real, including the cat and genny, putting out signage and cones, digging up the ground and laying down cold-lay. 

You will do at least 1 unit per day and at the end of the day, there will be an open book exam comprising 20 multiple-choice questions assessing your knowledge of the unit. 
Those who successfully complete the NRSWA Supervisor Birmingham course will have a comprehensive understanding of: 

  • Their professional obligations pursuant to the NRSWA.
  • Best practices as established by the Approved Codes of Practice (ACOPs).
  • How to safely and effectively perform their duties.
  • How to properly employ necessary PPE and other safety equipment.

This will be done through full training and assessment on the Supervisor units.
 
The NRSWA Streetworks Supervisor Units 

Your full 5 day course will qualify you in the following units: 

(Important: the numbers in brackets are the old streetworks unit numbers) 

  • LA (01) – Location & avoidance of underground apparatus 
  • S1 (10) – Monitoring, signing, lighting and guarding
  • S2 (11) – Monitoring excavation in the highway
  • S3 (12) – Monitoring reinstatement & compaction of backfill layer
  • S4 (13) – Monitoring reinstatement of sub and road base in non bituminous material
  • S5 (14) – Monitoring reinstatement of bituminous materials 
  • S7 (16) – Monitoring reinstatement of modular surfaces and concrete footways
 
Those who successfully complete the NRSWA Supervisor Streetworks Course in Birmingham will receive certification from Cabwi, City & Guilds, SQA, Lantra or another licensed certification body. Certification will be valid for 5 years and be accompanied by an SWQR card with your certification number, qualifications and expiry date.

No, there would need to be a streetworks operative on the site carrying out the physical work. 

There are no beginner units. Each unit delivers something different. If you have no experience, there are books you can read prior to a course or if you can get some practical work experience with a company that would benefit you greatly. 
 
If you require supervisor units - while the operative units are not compulsory – gaining the operatives units first and doing the physical works can be of help.
