To work on the local authority roads you must be properly certified, that is the law. To obtain certification you must pass a streetworks training course such as our NRSWA Operative Streetworks course in Derby. The NRSWA Operative Streetworks course takes place over the course of 5 days and covers all aspects of the Operative’s job including signing, lighting and guarding, excavations and reinstatement (including reinstatement of modular surfaces) and much more.

The NRSWA Operative Streetworks Course in Derby will take place over 5 consecutive days. Each unit will be led by one of our experienced and highly-trained instructors who will expect participants to engage with the material throughout. 

There will be 2 elements to the course. Firstly theory in the classroom, a variety of delivery methods will be employed including PowerPoint presentations, video, handouts, and q&a's. 

Then secondly you will get hands on experience having a go at the practical side for real, including using the cat and genny, putting out signage and cones, digging up the ground and laying down cold-lay. 

You will do at least 1 unit per day and at the end of the day, there will be an open book exam comprising 20 multiple-choice questions assessing your knowledge of the unit.
Those who successfully complete the NRSWA Operative Derby course will have a comprehensive understanding of: 

  • Their professional obligations pursuant to the NRSWA.
  • Best practices as established by the Approved Codes of Practice (ACOPs).
  • How to safely and effectively perform their duties.
  • How to properly employ necessary PPE and other safety equipment.

This will be done through full training and assessment on the Operative units.
 
The NRSWA Streetworks Operative Units 

Your full 5 day course will qualify you in the following units: 

(Important: the numbers in brackets are the old streetworks unit numbers) 

  • LA (01) – Location & avoidance of underground apparatus
  • O1 (02) – Signing, lighting and guarding
  • O2 (03) – Excavation in the highway
  • O3 (04) – Reinstatement & compaction of backfill materials
  • O4 (05) – Reinstatement of sub base & road in non bituminous materials
  • O5 (06) – Reinstatement of cold-lay bituminous materials
  • O6 (07) – Reinstatement of hot lay bituminous materials (subject to centre)
  • O8 (09) – Reinstatement of modular surfaces and concrete footway
 
Those who successfully complete the NRSWA Operative Streetworks Course in Derby will receive certification from Cabwi, City & Guilds, SQA, Lantra or another licensed certification body. Certification will be valid for 5 years and be accompanied by an SWQR card with your certification number, qualifications and expiry date. 
 The full 5 day NRSWA operative course is for anyone who wants to undertake all of the physical works on the roads within the UK. Including excavation, backfill, reinstatement, signing, guarding and using tarmac and cold-lay materials.

Yes, you can carry out all the physical works covered by your units. However you need to have a streetworks supervisor assigned to the site with the equivalent supervisor units. 

There are no beginner units. Each unit delivers something different. If you have no experience, there are books you can read prior to a course or if you can get some practical work experience with a company that would benefit you greatly. 
  
If you require supervisor units - while the operative units are not compulsory – gaining the operatives units first and doing the physical works can be of help.
