NRSWA Cat & Genny Course in Merton

The NRSWA CAT & Genny course in Merton provides operatives and supervisors with the knowledge and skills they need to conduct effective cable avoidance operations, to operate the latest iterations of the Cable Avoidance Tool (CAT) and the Signal Generator (Genny) and to run their worksite in accordance with HSG 47 regulations. Street work brings with it the possibility of catastrophic encounters with essential underground services. These cables, pipes and other utilities cannot simply be moved to make way for streetworks. Instead, operatives and supervisors need to locate, identify and work around them. And that is where the NRSWA Cat & Genny course in Merton comes in.

The NRSWA CAT & Genny course will be split into 2 segments. The first segment will be the theoretical segment presented in the morning, in a classroom setting using textbooks, PowerPoint presentations and other learning platforms.

The second segment will be presented in the afternoon and stress the practical application of the theoretical knowledge. Class participants will be expected to locate and identify underground services using the CAT & Genny tools and best practices. The instructor will also assess the participant's ability to accurately decipher street plans.
Upon successful completion of the NRSWA CAT & Genny course participants will be able to:

  • Operate both the CAT & Genny machines safely and effectively.
  • Read and accurately interpret gas, electrics, water and telecom service plans.
  • Locate important utilities using the Cable Avoidance Tool.
  • Create a plan indicating the location of any services.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and use of necessary PPE.
  • Work in accordance with HSG 47 regulations.

During both the theoretical and practical phases of the course, the instructor will be assessing the degree to which each participant has internalised the information. At the end of the day, there will be a 20-question, multiple-choice exam. The participant must answer 80% of the questions correctly to earn certification.

The resulting CAT & Genny certificate will be valid for 3 years.
