NRSWA Cat & Genny Course in New Malden

All it takes is for one backhoe to rupture one water main, or tear into one utility cable for an entire area of a city or town to be thrown into chaos. Proper use of the CAT & Genny machines is what separates order from chaos in roadway construction and our NRSWA CAT & Genny course near New Malden is how you learn to operate these vital pieces of machinery.

The CAT or Cable Avoidance Tool, enables workers to locate and identify underground utilities so that excavation on the jobsite does not result in the aforementioned chaos. The Genny tool is so-called because it is a signal generator. Its job is to latch onto and send a pulse down the length of a pipe or cable so the CAT can trace its path.

The sheer volume of utility lines, water pipes and cables found under the average road these days is formidable. In order to fend off costly accidents that set the project back, roadwork professionals use the CAT and Genny tools. Our NRSWA CAT & Genny course near New Malden supplies both the theoretical and practical knowledge you will need to operate these machines effectively.
Upon successful completion of this course, participants will know how to:

  • Safely operate both the CAT and the Genny machines.
  • Read and interpret utility service plans.
  • Locate, identify and track underground utilities.
  • Create a schematic indicating the location of underground hazards.
  • Comply with the government's HSG 47 regulations.
  • Select and make use of the correct PPE gear.
The course lasts for one day with morning and afternoon sessions. The morning sessions will cover theoretical aspects of the machines, while the afternoon sessions will provide a chance to get hands-on experience with both devices. At the end of the day, there will be a multiple-choice exam. To earn certification you must answer at least 16 of 20 questions correctly.
