NRSWA Cat & Genny Course in Streatham

There's more to roadwork than backhoes and traffic cones. One mistake can rupture an underground pipe or snap an underground cable and cause an entire neighbourhood to lose water or power. Those conducting roadworks need to be properly trained in locating and identifying underground hazards and the NRSWA CAT & Genny Course near Streatham is how you get that training.

CAT is short for "Cable Avoidance Tool". The CAT enables workers to locate and identify underground utilities such as the aforementioned pipes and cables. Genny, on the other hand, is short for "Signal Generator". The Genny is attached to one end of an underground pipe by way of a signal clamp and then sends a pulse down the length of the pipe that is traced by the CAT.

Learning how to use these devices is crucial for anyone who aspires to perform construction work on roadways in the UK. The CAT and Genny course provides both a theoretical background into these devices and hands-on experience using the devices on a mock jobsite. Those who successfully complete the course will receive certification good for 3 years.
Upon successful completion of the CAT & Genny course near Streatham participants will be able to:

  • Read and correctly interpret public utility service plans.
  • Safely operate both the CAT and Genny machines.
  • Locate and identify underground utilities using the CAT.
  • Understand HSG 47 regulations related to avoiding underground services.
  • Create their own plan that indicates the location of underground hazards.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of appropriate PPE gear.
The course lasts one full day. In the morning the instructors will cover theoretical aspects of the equipment. During the afternoon the focus will shift to practical, hands-on instruction. At the end of the days' sessions, there will be a multiple-choice exam. Participants must answer 16 of 20 questions correctly to earn certification.
