The NRSWA Streetworks Training for Construction Companies ensures construction companies employed to work on our roads know exactly what they are doing in order to minimise accidents, protect underground services and maintain consistent working practices. The New Roads and Street Works Act of 1991 requires that only trained and certified individuals are allowed to undertake roadwork activities. Operatives focus on performing safe excavations and correct site setups. Operatives can expect a 1-Day course, while supervisor courses typically take 5 days, depending on the number of units completed. The course is divided into classroom-based instruction as well as hands-on training with relevant machinery and other worksite components.
Core subjects covered include:
- Proper signing, lighting and guarding of worksites
- Safe excavation practices and backfill techniques
- Health and safety legislation and duty of care responsibilities
- Reinstatement of various road surfaces
- Proper management of vehicular and pedestrian traffic
- Environmental practices and public safety measures
At the end of the instruction period, there will be a multiple-choice exam comprising 20 questions. You must answer at least 16 of 20 correctly to receive certification. If you do, certification will be awarded:

Certification will be valid for 5 years from the date of issue.

Yes. Unit LA (previously known as unit 1) is for both Streetworks operatives and supervisors working on the roads, they do not require a separate qualification.
The NRSWA Streetworks Unit LA is specifically for those who need to located underground apparatus whilst working on the UK roads and highways. It is a key unit which you need if you intend to qualify in any of the Streetworks excavation and reinstatement units.
