NRSWA Operative Streetworks Course Wallington

Anyone carrying out physical labour on a roadworks site in Wallington must be certified as an operative, and the NRSWA Operative Streetworks course provides the required qualification.

Operative Certification Required for Physical Labour on Roadworks Sites

If your job requires you to perform any type of physical labour on a roadworks site, you are classified as an operative and must be certified as such. Physical labour in this case could mean anything from installing wires to moving materials from one part of the jobsite to another. The NRSWA Operative Streetworks course in Wallington provides a platform for you to obtain that certification.

Unless you are a streetworks supervisor, chances are you are an operative. And if you are, you will need to undergo proper training and certification. The NRSWA Operative Streetworks course in Wallington is a 1-day course designed to provide that training and certification. The day's instruction is divided into 2 sessions: morning and afternoon, with a lunch break in between.
During the morning session, the instructor will cover the "whys and hows" of the operative's position, and during the afternoon session, participants will have a chance to practice what they've learned on a mock road construction site. At the end of the afternoon session, there will be a short exam comprising 20 multiple-choice questions. You must answer 16 of 20 correctly in order to gain certification.
Those who pass the exam will receive certification from one of the following bodies:
  •  Lantra
  • City & Guilds
  • The Scottish Qualification Authority (SQA)
  • The Certification and Assessment Board for the Water Industry (CABWI)
That certification will be valid for 5 years from the date of issue.
If, for whatever reason, you fail to pass the exam, you have the option of taking it again. You will, however, have to wait 48 hours before re-registering, and you will need to pay the registration fee again.

If for some reason a person should fail the multiple choice exam it is not the end of the line. They have the option of taking the course over to attempt to gain certification. There are a couple of stipulations, however. The first is that the person must wait at least 48 hours from the time they are notified that they failed to re-register for the course. And the second is that they will need to pay the course registration fee again.

Frequently Asked Questions

This course is ideal for anyone who carries out hands-on duties on or around roadworks, including utility workers, construction operatives, telecoms teams, groundworkers, and anyone assisting with excavations or reinstatement tasks. You do not need previous NRSWA qualifications to attend.

You should bring a valid form of ID and wear appropriate work clothing. PPE is usually provided for the practical session, but some centres may ask you to bring your own safety boots or high-vis vest. You will be informed after booking.

The practical element is hands-on but not overly strenuous. It is designed to test your understanding of safe working practices rather than your physical ability. If you have any accessibility requirements, the training provider can usually make adjustments.

If you don’t achieve the required 16/20 score, you can retake the exam after 48 hours. You will need to re-register and pay the exam fee again. You do not need to redo the full course unless you choose to.

Yes. All listed awarding bodies (Lantra, City & Guilds, SQA, and CABWI) are nationally recognised across the UK. Your certificate is valid no matter which provider you train with.

This qualification allows you to perform operative-level tasks legally and safely. However, certain activities require a qualified supervisor to oversee the works. This course does not replace the Streetworks Supervisor qualification.

Yes we can complete training on your site for 6 or more delegates. We can also complete training on evenings and weekends to work around you. Call us on 0333 301 0226.
