NRSWA Operative Streetworks Course near Wakefield

If you perform physical labour on a roadworks jobsite, you're considered an operative, and you'll need to take the NRSWA Operative Streetworks Course in Wakefield.

NRSWA Operative Streetworks Course Wakefield

If your job description calls for you to perform any type of manual labour on UK Streetworks construction sites, you are classified as an "operative" and must receive proper training and certification before you start work. This is not optional. All roadwork operatives must receive this training and be properly certified, and the best and easiest way to do so is to take the NRSWA Operative Streetworks Course in Wakefield.

The NRSWA Operative Streetworks Course in Wakefield was designed to provide people with the training and certification they need to pursue a career in UK roadwork. If you are unsure whether you qualify as an operative, simply ask yourself the following: "Does my job call for me to perform any type of physical labour?" That applies to carpenters and electricians as much as it does to day labourers. If the answer is "yes", you are an operative.
NRSWA Operative Streetworks Course in Wakefield is a 1-day course divided into morning and afternoon classes. During the morning session, we cover the hows and whys of the operative's job. While during the afternoon, participants have a chance to work with relevant equipment on a mock jobsite.

At the end of the day, there is a short exam comprising 20 multiple-choice questions. You must answer at least 16 of 20 questions correctly to receive certification. If you pass the test, certification will be issued by one of the following:

  • City & Guilds
  • The Certification and Assessment Board for the Water Industry (CABWI)
  • The Scottish Qualification Authority (SQA)
  • Lantra

Certification will be valid for 5 years from the date of issue. If you fail the test, you can take the course over.

Frequently Asked Questions

This course is ideal for anyone who carries out hands-on duties on or around roadworks, including utility workers, construction operatives, telecoms teams, groundworkers, and anyone assisting with excavations or reinstatement tasks. You do not need previous NRSWA qualifications to attend.

You should bring a valid form of ID and wear appropriate work clothing. PPE is usually provided for the practical session, but some centres may ask you to bring your own safety boots or high-vis vest. You will be informed after booking.

The practical element is hands-on but not overly strenuous. It is designed to test your understanding of safe working practices rather than your physical ability. If you have any accessibility requirements, the training provider can usually make adjustments.

If you don’t achieve the required 16/20 score, you can retake the exam after 48 hours. You will need to re-register and pay the exam fee again. You do not need to redo the full course unless you choose to.

Yes. All listed awarding bodies (Lantra, City & Guilds, SQA, and CABWI) are nationally recognised across the UK. Your certificate is valid no matter which provider you train with.

This qualification allows you to perform operative-level tasks legally and safely. However, certain activities require a qualified supervisor to oversee the works. This course does not replace the Streetworks Supervisor qualification.
