No road construction site in the UK is safe without effective signing, lighting and guarding (SLG). Properly designed and installed SLG components are essential to guide vehicular and pedestrian traffic through the jobsite safely. If your job requires you to install SLG, you will need to be trained and certified. You get that training and certification by taking the NRSWA Unit 01 Streetworks course in Wakefield.
The Unit 01 Streetworks course is intended for those who set up SLG on active jobsites, not those who supervise them. If your job is to supervise, you will need to take the Unit S1 course. That said, the Unit 01 course is split into morning and afternoon sessions. During the morning, the whys and hows of SLG will be covered in detail. And during the afternoon, participants will have a chance to get hands-on experience with real equipment on a mock jobsite.
At the end of the afternoon session, there will be a short exam consisting of 20 questions. You must answer at least 16 of the 20 questions correctly to gain certification. Successful candidates will receive certification from one of the following licensing bodies:
- Lantra
- City & Guilds
- CABWI (Certification and Assessment Board for the Water Industry)
- SQA (Scottish Qualifications Authority)
For whatever reason, not everyone passes the exam. Fortunately, if you fail the exam, you are not out of options. You have the ability to take the course again (not just the exam), but you will need to wait 48 hours to reregister, and you will be compelled to pay the registration fee in full a second time.
