NRSWA Streetworks Training for Telecoms & Fibre Contractors

The NRSWA Streetworks Training for Telecoms & Fibre Contractors ensures operatives and supervisors are able to work safely and efficiently on public highways in the UK. With fibre rollout accelerating at an unprecedented speed and urban spaces becoming increasingly congested, this type of training is essential in order to maintain public safety and protect existing utilities. The course focuses on practical, real-world scenarios faced by telecoms and fibre teams, including excavation around live services and reinstating road surfaces to approved standards.

Streetworks training was introduced in 1991 by way of the New Roads and Streetworks Act. This act mandated that everyone working on a UK roadworks jobsite must have proper training and certification. For telecoms and fibre network contractors, Streetworks training focuses on the specific challenges of installing and maintaining related ducting, cabling and cabinets in public areas.
This course normally combines theory and hands-on instruction, with topics covered to include:

  • Health and safety law and duty of care
  • The basics of Signing, Lighting and Guarding (SLG) for worksites
  • Safe and effective excavation and backfilling techniques
  • Locating existing underground services using the CAT & Genny machines
  • Reinstatement of various surface types
  • Traffic management for minor projects
  • Environmental and public protection measures

Special attention is given to narrow trench work, cable installation and working in residential areas.
Should you successfully complete the course, certification will be provided by one of the following:

  • City & Guilds
  • The Certification and Assessment Board for the Water Industry (CABWI)
  • The Scottish Qualification Authority (SQA)
  • Lantra

Certification will be valid for 5 years from the date of issue.
If you fail this course, you have the option of taking the entire course again (not just the exam), but you will need to wait at least 48 hours after failing to re-register, and you must pay the full registration fee again.
