In the past just about anyone could perform road work in the UK. That changed in 1991 with the passage of the New Roads and Streetworks Act which stipulated that those who performed the vital work of building and maintaining our roads must be able to prove minimal competency. There are no prerequisites to taking the NRSWA Unit 01 Streetworks Course near Kingston but it would be helpful if participants had some familiarity with the Cable Avoidance Tool or CAT. That said, the Unit 01 Streetworks Course will cover various subjects including:

- Reading and interpreting site plans
- The operation and maintenance of the CAT and other devices
- Best practices to employ while performing road work
- Relevant safety and health regulations.
The Unit 01 course will take 1 full day and is divided into morning and afternoon sessions. During the morning the instructor will focus on theoretical aspects of road work. During the afternoon session, you will be introduced to relevant equipment and given a chance to get hands-on experience with it. This includes employing a real CAT machine on a mock jobsite.
At the end of the day, there will be an exam consisting of 20 multiple-choice questions. In order to obtain Unit 01 certification you must answer at least 16 of the 20 questions (80%) correctly. If you pass you will be awarded certification by either Lantra, City & Guilds, the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) or the Certification and Assessment Board for the Water Industry (CABWI). Certification will be valid for 5 years.
